HYDERABAD: The Union government has approved a survey for the proposed Regional Ring Rail around Hyderabad. The project aims to strengthen connectivity between the city’s Outer Ring Road, Regional Ring Road and nearby districts.

Union minister of state for railways Ravneet Singh Bittu informed Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy about the approval in a written reply on March 6. The survey will serve as the first step toward preparing a detailed project report (DPR).

Officials plan to align the railway line largely along the Regional Ring Road corridor. Meanwhile, they are finalising the route in consultation with the Telangana government.

Kiran Kumar Reddy said the survey marks an important step for the rail connectivity project around Hyderabad. He explained that the survey will help authorities prepare the DPR for the proposed network. Additionally, officials expect the railway alignment to follow the Regional Ring Road corridor.

However, the Centre will take further steps only after completing the DPR. According to Ravneet Singh, the government will then hold consultations with key stakeholders, including the Telangana government.

After that, authorities will send the proposal for appraisal to NITI Aayog and the Union finance ministry. Finally, the Centre will consider granting formal approval to the project.

Project expected to boost regional connectivity

The minister shared the update while responding to an issue raised by the Bhongir MP under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha.

Once completed, the Regional Ring Rail could significantly improve transport links between districts surrounding Hyderabad. Moreover, leaders believe the project will support regional economic growth and development.
