Hyderabad Rains Bring Gusty Winds, Tree Falls, and Traffic Jams

HYDERABAD: Light to moderate rain began affecting several parts of Hyderabad on Tuesday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow warning for the city and other Telangana districts. The alert will remain in effect from March 24 to 30.
The IMD said the sudden weather change comes from a trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over central Madhya Pradesh to North Maharashtra, along with another trough from the Gulf of Mannar to North Interior Karnataka.
According to the latest nowcast at 16.00 IST, light rain and thunderstorms with gusts of up to 40 kmph may occur at isolated locations in Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy, Vikarabad, and Sangareddy over the next two to three hours. Other districts expected to see rain include Adilabad, Jagtial, Kamareddy, Medak, Mulugu, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, and Siddipet.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph could hit isolated areas across Telangana throughout the week. Maximum temperatures are likely to stay 1-2°C below normal for the next 48 hours, giving temporary relief from summer heat. The IMD said temperatures will rise by 2-3°C over the following four days.
More than 14 trees fell in the Cyberabad IT corridor and Hyderabad West Zone between 18.45 and 19.30 IST due to rain. Heavy traffic congestion affected Gachibowli, Kondapur, Yousufguda, Hafeezpet, Miyapur, and Madhapur. Rainfall measured around 2 cm, but strong winds toppled multiple trees on key traffic corridors during peak office hours, worsening congestion.
An electricity pole and a tree blocked the Gachibowli–DLF route temporarily. Hyderabad Disaster Response and Fire Services (HYDRAA DRF) teams responded immediately. They cleared about 12 tree falls and continue working at two remaining locations.
