Hyderabad residents struggle to pay property tax online

HYDERABAD: Residents in the city say they are unable to pay property tax online despite repeated attempts, as civic authorities have not addressed technical and administrative issues.

Citizens have submitted requests seeking linkage of their phone numbers with the Unique Property Tax Identification Number to enable online payments. However, officials have not acted on these requests. Complaints related to other issues are also pending without resolution.

MyGHMC app failures disrupt online property tax payments

Like electricity and water bills, property tax is paid online. From April 1, residents have been trying to make payments through UPI apps and the MyGHMC mobile application. Despite having sufficient balance, transactions are failing repeatedly.

Users report that even after multiple attempts, payments do not go through and show errors such as “process failed” in online records.

Phone number linkage issues block taxpayers across city

Many residents who purchased flats and registered them in their names are unable to pay property tax. During registration, property tax assessments are linked to existing numbers, often not updated to the new owner’s contact details.

As a result, new owners cannot complete payments. Citizens have applied to link their phone numbers, but these applications remain pending. Even those approaching sub-registrar offices are unable to resolve the issue.

Thousands of applications pending with civic officials

Across three municipal corporations, there are about 28 lakh properties paying tax. Of these, around 8 lakh properties do not have linked phone numbers.

Circles with high pending applications include:

  • Ameenpur: 1,500
  • Nizampet: 1,100
  • Ghatkesar: 750
  • Yakutpura: 500
  • Kavadiguda: 480

In the past year, about 55,000 applications were filed for phone number linkage. Of these, 11,000 remain unresolved.

Before the introduction of integrated systems for registration, mutation and tax assessment, property owners relied on agents or bill collectors. Many intermediaries registered their own phone numbers in official records. Requests to update these details are now being ignored by authorities.
