Hyderabad Roads Crumble as Patchwork Repairs Fail

HYDERABAD: Recent rains have left several roads across the city riddled with potholes, causing hardship for motorists and pedestrians. Residents alleged that municipal authorities carried out poor-quality patchwork repairs, which have already broken apart and left the roads in worse condition.
Many roads now have rainwater-filled potholes, making it difficult for motorists to judge their depth. Two-wheeler riders are among the worst affected, with several reportedly losing balance after hitting hidden potholes.
Poor road repairs worry residents
Residents said authorities continue to rely on patchwork instead of carrying out permanent road restoration. They alleged that newly repaired stretches develop potholes again after only a few spells of rain, raising concerns over the quality of maintenance.
Bhavani, a resident of KPHB Colony, said, “There are big potholes and pits on every road and street, both on the main road and inside the colony. We complained to the municipal authorities, but nothing happened. How long will the authorities wait to fill the potholes?”
Residents fill potholes themselves
Frustrated by the lack of lasting repairs, residents in some localities have started filling potholes with soil, sand and gravel to reduce the risk of accidents.
Ramesh, a shopkeeper in Himayatnagar, said, “Vehicles kept falling into the potholes every day. During the rains, drivers could not judge how deep the potholes were. So we collected soil and sand and filled them ourselves to make the road a little safer.”
Temporary fix creates new risks
Residents said the temporary solution has created another hazard.
S. Lakshmi said, “When it rains, the sand and gravel spread across the road and make the surface slippery. Two-wheelers skid easily, and the mud splashes onto pedestrians and nearby shops. It is not a proper solution, but we had no other choice.”
Residents urged civic authorities to carry out permanent road restoration instead of relying on temporary patchwork repairs.
