From local to global: How Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club is shaping Polo’s future

Hyderabad: When you think of Polo sport, the vibrant city of Hyderabad might not be the first place that comes to mind. Yet, the Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club (HPRC) has been steadily building a name for itself, not only in India but also on the international polo circuit. With an upcoming international polo tournament set to bring teams from across the globe to Hyderabad city, the HPRC is about to shine in the spotlight once again. Reaz Ahmed, the General Secretary and Administrator of the club, spoke with Hyderabad Mail about the club’s rich history, its current operations, and the exciting future of polo in Hyderabad.
A Glimpse into the Club’s Storied Past
The journey of the Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club is deeply intertwined with the city’s history. The roots of the club can be traced back to 1912 when an equine hospital was set up at Masab Tank by the then-royal family. This facility, donated by a princess, originally served as a health center. In 1932, it was officially transformed into the Golconda Polo Club, where polo enthusiasts began to play regularly. After India’s independence and the subsequent formation of Andhra Pradesh, the club evolved into the AP Riding Club in 1957.
However, in 2005, the AP Riding Club faced a major setback when it lost its grounds. But for the true polo lovers of Hyderabad, this was not the end. The Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club was founded by a group of passionate polo enthusiasts who refused to let the sport fade away. “We started the club right after the closure of the AP Riding Club, and since then, we’ve been on a mission to promote polo and equestrian activities at both national and international levels,” Reaz Ahmed explained.

International Polo Returns to Hyderabad
Fast forward to 2025, and the club is now preparing to host one of the most prestigious events on its calendar: an International Polo Tournament. The competition, set to take place from February 23 to March 2, will feature teams from eight countries, including the USA, UK, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, and India. “This year, the tournament feels like a World Cup,” said Ahmed. “It’s not just a local competition; it’s a global celebration of Polo.”
The tournament, which is being sponsored by Telangana Tourism, will kick off on February 23, with teams arriving a day earlier for the preparations. Over the course of the next week, spectators will be treated to thrilling matches, league games, and finals. “For the past four years, we’ve been taking polo to international standards,” Ahmed proudly remarked. “Hosting this tournament is a testament to how far we’ve come.”
A Hub for Equestrian Enthusiasts
The Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club is more than just a venue for polo matches. It’s a space where people of all ages and skill levels can learn about and engage in a variety of equestrian activities. From beginner riders to seasoned polo players, the club caters to everyone.
“Polo isn’t just a game; it’s a lifestyle. And we make it accessible to anyone with the passion and dedication to learn,” Ahmed said. The club offers extensive training in polo, dressage, and jumping. It’s also equipped with top-notch facilities, including a polo stadium that can accommodate 1,000 spectators, as well as riding arenas, a show jumping ground, and a covered indoor arena that allows training year-round, rain or shine.
“People come here not just to play polo, but to immerse themselves in the entire equestrian culture,” Ahmed added. For members, the club offers flexibility in terms of participation, with options for both regular and occasional riders. Monthly membership fees start at INR 6,000, and the club ensures that members get the most out of their time, whether they’re there for polo, jumping, or dressage.
More Than Just Polo
While polo is at the heart of the club, it’s not the only activity on offer. The club has something for everyone. It boasts state-of-the-art facilities such as an indoor gym, swimming pool, squash courts, and badminton courts. For those who enjoy outdoor sports, there are tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts, as well as a football ground. “We believe in offering a holistic experience to our members,” said Ahmed.
What sets the club apart is its commitment to its horses. “We don’t just train riders; we train horses to fit their role. Whether it’s for polo, show jumping, or general riding, we make sure each horse is trained to its strengths,” he explained. The club’s emphasis on quality training and care for both horses and riders has led to a high success rate, whether it’s in competitions or daily practice.
Preparing for the Future
As the club looks to the future, there are exciting developments on the horizon. One of the most significant plans is the construction of a three-storied accommodation building with 49 guest rooms, set to be completed by January 2026. “In the past, we’ve had to rely on external accommodations when hosting international teams. With our own guest rooms, we can provide a more seamless experience for everyone involved,” said Ahmed. This expansion will ensure that the club can continue hosting high-level events without logistical constraints.
Additionally, the club is building a fine-dining restaurant and banquet hall to cater to the growing needs of both members and international visitors. “It’s about maintaining a certain standard when hosting these international teams,” Ahmed said. “We want our guests to have the best experience, both on and off the field.”
A Legacy in the Making
The Hyderabad Polo and Riding Club is much more than a sports facility; it’s a community that brings people together through a shared love of horses and polo. From its humble beginnings to its current position as a hub for international polo, the club’s growth and success are a testament to the passion and dedication of its members.
With an unwavering commitment to promoting polo and equestrian sports, the club is not just shaping the future of polo in Hyderabad, it’s leaving an indelible mark on the global polo scene. As Reaz Ahmed put it, “Polo is a sport that transcends boundaries, and we’re proud to be a part of its global journey.”
