HYDERABAD: Police have cautioned against circulating unverified and misleading information in connection with a sexual assault case involving a trainee pilot reported in Begumpet.

In a press note, Deputy Commissioner of Police CH Sridhar stated that the case is under investigation and due legal procedures are being followed. He said any speculation or unverified content at this stage could affect the probe and cause distress to the victim and family.

Legal provisions bar identity disclosure of sexual assault victims

Police reminded that under Section 72 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 corresponding to Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code disclosure of a rape victim’s identity, directly or indirectly, is a punishable offence.

They also cited the Supreme Court judgment in Nipun Saxena vs Union of India (2018), which prohibits revealing any details that could lead to identification of the victim. This includes family particulars, place of residence, educational institution, or workplace.

Authorities emphasised that even indirect disclosures such as mentioning the training institution, locality, or family details must be strictly avoided.

Media, public asked to act responsibly and remove violative content

Police urged media organisations, digital platforms, and individuals to refrain from publishing or sharing any content that could reveal the identity of the victim or her family.

They also advised against spreading unverified or speculative information related to the case and called for sensitivity and restraint in reporting.

Further, the press note requested removal of any such content already uploaded or shared on digital platforms, including YouTube and social media, if it violates legal provisions.
