Hyderabad police warn public against digital arrest scams

HYDERABAD: VC Sajjanar on Monday cautioned the public against “digital arrest” scams, saying there is no such provision in law and urging people not to panic or transfer money.
Commissioner says no legal concept called digital arrest
In a video message, Sajjanar said the issue had drawn attention over the past month, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also flagged the scam in his “Mann Ki Baat” address.
Fraudsters impersonate central agencies to threaten victims
Despite repeated advisories from the Centre and states, many people particularly senior citizens are still falling prey, he said. Fraudsters pose as officials of agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation, threaten victims with arrest, and display fake FIRs.
Call 1930 immediately if you receive such calls
“There is nothing like a digital arrest. This is a fabricated deception,” Sajjanar said, urging citizens not to believe such callers. “Do not panic and do not lose your money. If in doubt, immediately call 1930.”
