Hyderabad police seize banned Chinese manja, arrest one

HYDERABAD: The Commissioner’s Task Force, West Zone, arrested one person for illegally procuring and selling banned nylon-coated Chinese manja and seized 345 bobbins worth ₹6.9 lakh in the city.
The accused was identified as Mohd Shazaib, 42, a kite trader residing near Guntal Shah Baba dargah in Vatapally. He was apprehended at Sadhu Kite Shop near Deccan Bakery in Kalapathar, under the limits of Kalapathar police station.
Seizure at Kalapathar
Police recovered 345 bobbins of Monofil Gold, a synthetic nylon-coated Chinese manja that has been banned in Telangana. The seized material was valued at ₹6.9 lakh.
Supply chain traced to Haryana
According to police, the accused procured the banned manja through an associate, Vikram Mehta, a native of Karnal in Haryana. The material was sourced from Haryana and transported to Hyderabad. The accused was selling the manja at ₹2,000 per bobbin for illegal gain.
Ban in force since 2016
The Telangana government banned the procuring, stocking, sale and use of Chinese manja in January 2016 under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, citing risks to bird life and human safety. Violators face imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of up to ₹1 lakh, or both.
The accused and the seized material were handed over to the station house officer of Kalapathar police station for further investigation and legal action.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Inspector Ch Yadender and sub-inspector G Sandeep Reddy of the West Zone Task Force.
