Hyderabad police seize 17 vehicles in drunk driving drive

HYDERABAD: Ahead of New Year’s Eve, city police seized 17 vehicles in a special drunk-driving drive conducted on December 29 at the Malakpet–Dilsukhnagar Bus Stop stretch.
The operation was led by Traffic Inspector Mohammed Asif, with Sub-Inspector Narmada and personnel from the Traffic Wing and Law and Order Wing jointly participating. Police said traffic violations were closely monitored at the junction.
Checks to intensify on December 31
Police said daily drunk-and-drive checks have been underway since December 24 between 9 pm and 1 am. On December 31, enforcement will be intensified, with inspections continuing late into the night and early morning.
Traffic Inspector Mohammed Asif urged citizens not to drive after consuming alcohol and advised the use of designated drivers or alternative transport. He said strict legal action would be taken against offenders as per the instructions of Commissioner of Police VC Sajjanar.
“Anyone found driving under the influence will be mandatorily produced before the court, where jail terms and heavy fines may be imposed,” police said.
Commissioner warns of strict action
On December 24, the Hyderabad Commissioner of Police announced a week-long special drive against drunk driving in view of New Year’s Eve. During a teleconference with field-level officers, he reviewed security arrangements for Christmas and New Year’s Day and directed officials to ensure tight security at hotspots.
Police said drunk-driving checks will be conducted at 100 locations on New Year’s Eve, with additional force from the seventh platoon deployed. Offenders face fines of ₹10,000 and up to six months’ imprisonment. Officials also warned that driving licences could be cancelled permanently.
The commissioner cautioned against racing and stunts and said 15 SHE Teams would be deployed at party venues and other locations to ensure women’s safety. He appealed to the public to celebrate New Year’s Eve responsibly.
