Hyderabad police rescue newborn, arrest 10 in baby trafficking case

Hyderabad: The Commissioner’s Task Force, South Zone Team, along with the Chandrayangutta Police, apprehended a gang of ten members involved in the illegal sale of a newborn baby boy on Monday night, September 23, 2024. The 15-day-old infant was rescued and placed in the safe custody of the Child Welfare Center.
The accused have been identified as Shaik Ismail, Sulthana Begum, Nazma Begum, Feroz Khan, and Sayeeda Shaik, residents of Attapur; Mehdi Ali and Sayeeda Begu from Falaknuma; Fathima Rehamth and Syed Imtiaz Pasha from Suleman Nagar; and Nafeez Begum from Kishanbagh.
During the operation, police seized nine mobile phones that were used in the illicit activity.
According to the investigation, the main accused, Mehdi Ali, who has lived in Hyderabad his entire life, was struggling financially from his commission-based business. In an effort to increase his earnings, he devised a plan to sell newborns to childless couples for a significant commission. He approached parents Shaik Ismail and Sulthana Begum, convincing them to sell their newborn son for a sum of Rs. 2,50,000 to alleviate their financial difficulties.
Subsequently, Ali contacted various brokers, including Fathima, Rahmath, Syed Imtiaz Pasha, Nazma Begum, Feroz Khan, Sayeeda Shaik, Nafeeza Begum, and Sayeeda Begum, to find potential customers. They circulated the baby’s photo via WhatsApp, claiming the boy was available for sale.
Acting on credible information, the Commissioner’s Task Force, South Zone, along with Chandrayangutta police, apprehended the gang within the jurisdiction of Chandrayangutta and successfully rescued the infant.
The arrested individuals and the baby were handed over to the Station House Officer of Chandrayangutta Police Station for further action. A case has been registered under Cr. No. 324/2024, Sections 80 and 81 of the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act, 2015, and the investigation is ongoing.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Ande Srinivasa Rao, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Task Force, Hyderabad, with key involvement from Inspector S. Raghavendra, SHO K. Guru Nath, and SIs G. Anjaneyulu, K. Narsimulu, N. Naveen, along with the Task Force and Chandrayangutta Police staff.
