Hyderabad Police to issue memos to officers over acquittals caused by probe lapses
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Police will hold investigating officers accountable for criminal case acquittals by issuing formal memos to officers whose lapses contribute to accused persons walking free.
The decision emerged after the Prosecution Review Committee reviewed grave criminal cases that ended in acquittals during January and March 2026. The committee met on Saturday at the Office of the Additional Commissioner of Police, Crimes & Special Investigation Team (SIT). M Srinivas, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crimes & SIT, chaired the meeting.
Committee reviews acquittal cases
The committee closely examined serious criminal cases that resulted in acquittals during January and March 2026. Members analysed each case to identify weaknesses in investigation and prosecution.
They reviewed procedural lapses, gaps in evidence collection, poor documentation and other shortcomings that weakened the prosecution’s case in court. As a result, the committee identified areas that require immediate improvement.
Police to issue memos for investigation lapses
The committee decided to fix responsibility wherever investigation lapses contributed to acquittals. Accordingly, Hyderabad Police will issue formal memos to the investigating officers concerned.
Officials said the initiative aims to improve accountability among investigators. In addition, it seeks to raise the overall quality of criminal investigations across the city.
Focus on stronger investigations and prosecutions
The committee also discussed several measures to prevent similar lapses in future. Senior police officers, legal advisers, public prosecutors, assistant public prosecutors and Station House Officers participated in the discussions.
They emphasised better coordination between investigators and prosecutors from the beginning of every investigation. Furthermore, they stressed the importance of scientific evidence collection, accurate documentation, timely filing of charge sheets and effective presentation of evidence before courts.
Police officials said the Prosecution Review Committee will continue to review acquittal cases regularly. The committee will identify systemic shortcomings and recommend corrective measures wherever necessary.
Ultimately, Hyderabad Police aim to strengthen investigations, improve coordination between investigators and prosecutors, enhance conviction rates and reduce avoidable acquittals in the criminal justice system.
