Hyderabad police inspector demanded Rs. 50,000 to clear suspect’s name; Arrested

Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Telangana has arrested L. Balu Chowhan, the then Station House Officer (SHO) of Shah Inayat Gunj Police Station, Hyderabad on January 24, 2025. Balu Chowhan was apprehended after demanding a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from a complainant in exchange for removing his name as a suspect in a missing persons case.
Initially, Balu Chowhan had asked for Rs. 1.5 lakh but later reduced the amount to Rs. 50,000. The ACB arrested him for performing his duties dishonestly and improperly.
L. Balu Chowhan was presented before the Hon’ble Principal Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases at the Nampally court, Hyderabad. An investigation into the case is ongoing.
In a separate incident, on January 17, 2025, the ACB arrested R. Santhosh Tiwari, a Senior Assistant at the ENT Government Hospital in Koti, Hyderabad. Tiwari was caught accepting a bribe of Rs. 3,000 to process a complainant’s retirement benefits.
Tiwari had initially demanded Rs. 20,000 and had already accepted Rs. 17,000. He was caught by ACB’s City Unit-1 when he took the additional Rs. 3,000. A chemical test on his desk confirmed the bribe money. Tiwari has been arrested and will be presented in court.
The ACB has urged the public to report any bribery incidents to their toll-free number, 1064, ensuring confidentiality for victims and complainants.
