Hyderabad police drug screening drive finds 87 positive cases

Hyderabad police conduct drug screening drive at government hospitals

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Police Task Force and Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW), in coordination with local police, conducted surprise medical drug tests on 204 people, including rowdy sheeters, trouble mongers and habitual drug consumers involved in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases.

The special drive was conducted to create awareness among drug users about the legal consequences of drug abuse and related offences.

Medical tests were conducted at Osmania General Hospital, Gandhi Hospital and Government Hospital for Mental Care in coordination with doctors.

At Gandhi Hospital, 41 persons were tested, of whom 12 tested positive and 29 negative. At Osmania General Hospital, 90 persons were tested, with 52 testing positive and 38 negative. At Government Hospital for Mental Care, Erragadda, 73 persons underwent tests, of whom 23 tested positive and 50 negative.

In total, 87 out of 204 persons tested positive during the drive.

Counselling and legal action initiated

Police said individuals who tested positive were counselled by psychiatrists on the harmful effects of drug abuse and the need for rehabilitation. Appropriate legal cases are being booked against those found positive, in accordance with law.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Commissioner’s Task Force and H-NEW, Vaibhav Raghunath Gaikwad, said Hyderabad police remained committed to taking strict action against drug-related activities while helping affected individuals recover through counselling and rehabilitation.

Police also urged people to stay away from drugs and support efforts towards building a healthy and safe community.
