Hyderabad police conduct drug testing drive at government hospital

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Police conducted a surprise medical drug test drive on rowdy sheeters and suspected drug consumers on April 9, 2026, as part of an enforcement and awareness initiative.

The operation was carried out by the Task Force and Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) in coordination with local police staff, following directions from Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar.

The drive targeted individuals with a history of involvement in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases, as well as known troublemakers. Officials said the objective was to create awareness about the legal consequences of drug use.

Tests held at three hospitals with high positivity rate

Medical tests were conducted at Osmania General Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, and the Government Hospital for Mental Health at Erragadda, with support from doctors.

At Gandhi Hospital, 70 persons were tested, of whom 44 tested positive and 26 negative. At Osmania General Hospital, 80 persons were tested, with 59 positive and 21 negative results. At the Erragadda mental health facility, 89 persons were tested, of whom 86 tested positive and three negative.

In total, 239 individuals underwent testing, and 189 were found positive for drug consumption.

Counselling provided, legal action to follow

Officials said those who tested positive were counselled by psychiatrists on the harmful effects of drug abuse and the need for rehabilitation.

Police added that legal cases are being registered against the individuals found positive, in accordance with the law.

The programme was supervised by Deputy Commissioner of Police Vaibhav Raghunath Gaikwad, along with Additional Deputy Commissioners Andhe Srinivas (Charminar Zone) and Iqbal Siddique (Rajendra Nagar Zone).

Police said they remain committed to strict action against drug-related activities while also supporting rehabilitation efforts. They urged the public to stay away from drugs and contribute to a safe community.
