Hyderabad police shift foreign detainees to Jogipet centre, 184 deported since 2018

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Police has relocated its detention centre for foreign nationals to Jogipet in Sangareddy district, making the new transit facility fully operational, officials said on April 27, 2026.
The centre, set up under orders of the Telangana government, is used for housing foreign nationals involved in immigration violations, including illegal stay, visa overstay, and other offences. It also accommodates detainees linked to human trafficking and drug-related cases.
Facility handles illegal migration and visa violation cases
Since its initial establishment in 2018 at the Old Central Crime Station building in Basheerbagh, the facility has housed 196 foreign detainees. Of these, 184 have been deported after due process.
At present, 12 detainees nine men and three women from Sudan, Nigeria, Uganda and Cameroon are lodged at the centre, awaiting deportation.
Officials said deportation is carried out in coordination with national and international agencies after obtaining travel documents and clearances from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Transfers are conducted either by air or through designated border points under escort, in line with legal procedures.
Permanent transit home at Cherlapally gets government nod
The state government has permitted the temporary transit and detention centre at Jogipet Sub Jail with necessary facilities. The relocation and operationalisation were carried out under the supervision of V.C. Sajjanar, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, and executed by M. Srinivas, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes).
Authorities added that approval has also been granted for setting up a permanent transit home at Cherlapally prison.
Police said the department remains committed to ensuring national security, enforcing immigration laws, and maintaining humane conditions for detainees.
