Nigerian national deported for overstaying visa, alleged drug links

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Narcotic Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) has apprehended and deported a Nigerian national who had been living in India illegally after his passport and visa expired. The accused, identified as Johnkennedy Chukwuemeka Okoro (aliases Hopy Cup and Jeksa), 43, a native of Imo State, Nigeria, was deported following an inquiry that found him allegedly involved in drug-peddling activities.
Frequent travel, illegal stay uncovered
Okoro entered India on a business visa in 2012 and was engaged in the garment trade. Investigators found that his travel documents had long expired and that he frequently shuttled between Bengaluru and Hyderabad while continuing to reside in India illegally.
He was detained while moving suspiciously in the Asif Nagar police station limits. Though no drugs were found on him, authorities said he could not provide valid documents or a satisfactory explanation for his stay.
22 foreign nationals deported so far
With the support of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), H-NEW verified his credentials and initiated deportation proceedings, citing the risk of his continued involvement in illicit drug activities. The accused was sent back to Nigeria.
Since its inception, H-NEW has apprehended and deported 22 foreign nationals living illegally in India, including 10 this year alone, for overstaying their visas or holding expired passports.
Police urge vigilance against drug abuse
The Hyderabad Police appealed to the public to remain alert against drug abuse, noting that several foreign nationals enter India on medical, student and business visas and continue to stay after expiry, often engaging in illegal drug trade.
The police urged parents to monitor their children’s activities and report any information related to narcotic offences to H-NEW at 8712661601, adding: “Let’s work together to secure a drug-free Hyderabad.”
