Hyderabad police commissionerates set to rise to four

HYDERABAD: The number of police commissionerates in the state capital is set to increase from three to four, with the government planning a major reorganisation of existing jurisdictions and the creation of a new Future City police commissionerate.
As part of the restructuring, the Rachakonda police commissionerate will be renamed the Lasker police commissionerate. Proposals related to the changes have been prepared by the Director General of Police’s office.
Hyderabad earlier had only one police commissionerate, with surrounding areas falling under Rangareddy and other districts. With the growth of the information technology sector, the Cyberabad police commissionerate was created in 2002 by bringing together key areas of Rangareddy district. It initially surrounded the Hyderabad city police limits.
After the bifurcation of the state and in view of population growth and changing requirements, the government reorganised the region in 2016. Development-prone areas from neighbouring districts around Cyberabad were merged and the commissionerate was split into two. Initially known as Cyberabad East and Cyberabad West, the two were later named Cyberabad and Rachakonda police commissionerates.
Now, with Rachakonda being renamed Lasker and a new Future City commissionerate being added, the total number of police commissionerates in the capital region will rise to four.
Hyderabad police commissionerate, which has a history of nearly 140 years, underwent a major reorganisation in 1987. Further changes were introduced in 2002 with the creation of the Central Zone. In 2023, the number of zones was increased from five to seven, divisions from 17 to 28, and police stations from 60 to 72. Minor adjustments were also made in some police stations in April this year.
With the latest decision, the structure and jurisdiction of police commissionerates in the capital are set to undergo a significant transformation.
