Hyderabad police turn to AI for smart investigations

HYDERABAD:  The police department is taking steps to transform policing in line with advances in technology, with artificial intelligence (AI) set to play a key role in police work.

Advanced AI tools will be used to identify accused in Dial 112, cybercrime, narcotics and other cases. Director General of Police C V Anand has focused on upgrading the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and TG-Cop 2.0 modules.

Arrangements are also being made to provide field-level police personnel with real-time data during investigations and access to case information from across the state.

AI tool converts statements from any language into English

Through an AI-enabled tool and AI Cop Writer, complainants and witnesses will be able to give statements in any language they know. The AI Cop Writer will automatically convert their oral statements into English.

The translated statement can then be printed and submitted to investigating officers for registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

AI-based video analytics is also being used to scan closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera feeds to identify stolen vehicles.

Police link jail, police and court data systems

Prisons, police and courts are being linked to facilitate data sharing. Once a prisoner is released on bail, the information will be automatically updated through an AI-based system and made available to police, courts and other concerned departments.

Through the TG-Cop app, a constable will be able to check from the police station which accused have been released, details of pending cases against them and other information on a phone.

Five IPS officers lead dedicated technology team

The department plans to use advanced technology for AI-assisted case investigation and real-time data sharing with officers. A time limit will be prescribed for uploading data at police stations. If documents are not uploaded within the stipulated period, the system will prevent their subsequent entry.

DGP C V Anand reviewed these issues in May and constituted a dedicated technology team of five Indian Police Service (IPS) officers.

The officers have been assigned different areas, including AI technology in CCTNS, social media video analytics, AI-based drone technology, road safety, data intelligence, system designing and training.
