Why Hyderabad parents are opposing proposed school fee hike and what changes are likely

HYDERABAD: More than 250 parents gathered at an international school in Shaikpet on Saturday to raise concerns over a proposed fee hike, prompting the management to signal a possible review of its pricing model.
The meeting followed a detailed representation submitted by a parents’ collective, which questioned both the scale and structure of a proposed 10 per cent annual increase. Parents argued that such a model would impose a long-term financial burden due to compounding.
Parents question long-term financial burden of fee structure
A parent, requesting anonymity, said the management had agreed to hold internal discussions and meet them again next Saturday. “They said they will have an internal discussion and meet us again next Saturday. This sounds quite hopeful,” the parent said.
The management also indicated flexibility on alternative models. “They said they are okay with an 8 per cent increase for two years if that is what the government says,” the parent added.
Comparison shows sharp rise in fees over 10 years
In their representation, parents highlighted a 10-year comparison to illustrate the impact of the proposed hike. They said fees could rise to ₹4.4 lakh annually from a base of ₹1.7 lakh under the new model, compared to about ₹2.93 lakh under the earlier system.
“A 10 per cent annual increase is not merely a flat growth rate; it is a compounding financial burden,” the letter stated. It added, “By year 10, the new rule forces parents to pay nearly ₹1.5 lakh more per year. This trajectory is unsustainable for most families.”
Demand for transparency and uniformity in fee structure
Parents also raised concerns about fee differences within the same grade. They sought a joint meeting with a designated parent committee and demanded “a transparent breakdown of why such a steep compounding hike is necessary.”
The management has not issued a formal statement but indicated it would revisit the proposal after internal discussions.
