HYDERABAD: A Hyderabad based couple has appealed to external affairs minister S Jaishankar seeking urgent intervention to renew the Indian passport of their daughter, Hura Begum, who has been stranded in Muscat, Oman, for the past 15 years.

In a representation dated January 6, 2026, Shajahan Begum said her daughter, a resident of Kalapathar in Hyderabad, married an Omani national in 2010 and has since been unable to return to India due to passport-related issues.

According to the letter, Hura Begum’s Indian passport expired on August 20, 2016. It was renewed by the Indian Embassy, Muscat for one year, from November 26, 2016 to November 25, 2017. The passport could not be renewed thereafter due to unavoidable circumstances.

Shajahan Begum said her daughter has five children, of whom two died shortly after birth. The remaining three daughters are Omani nationals and hold Omani passports.

The parents said they are elderly and suffering from multiple ailments and wish to meet their daughter and grandchildren at least once. They requested the ministry to direct the Indian Embassy in Muscat to renew Hura Begum’s passport and grant Indian visas to her three children to enable the family to travel to India.

The letter also provided contact details of Hura Begum in Muscat and sought information on action taken in the matter.

There was no official response from the ministry or the Indian mission in Muscat at the time of filing this report.
