Hyderabad ORR metro expansion plan showing proposed corridors and junction links.

HYDERABAD: The state government is moving quickly on the proposed expansion of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation as the city’s limits are set to grow from 650 sq km to nearly 2,000 sq km. Officials are examining a plan to extend metro rail around the Outer Ring Road to create a full peripheral transit link.

ORR metro seen as key to future growth

Government sources said the areas along the ORR are being treated as the Telangana Core Urban Region for integrated development. Experts noted that a metro loop around the ORR would help restrict vehicles entering the city from national highways and improve mobility for residents in peripheral areas. They added that such a network would ease traffic pressure and reduce vehicle emissions.

Phase-II covers 163 km across eight corridors

The Congress government has outlined an ambitious metro expansion plan to match Hyderabad’s growth into a global city. In Phase-II, Part-A will include five corridors and Part-B will cover three corridors, totalling 163 km at a cost of ₹43.8crore. The state has sought repeated approvals from the Union government for detailed project reports.

Officials said Hyderabad currently ranks fifth in metro network length after Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata. The state aims to push Hyderabad to the top position through progressive expansion.

Previous Phase-III proposals around ORR

Under the earlier government, Phase-III proposals were prepared to link the ORR with the city. The plan included a 40-km corridor from Shamshabad junction (National Highway 44) through Tukkuguda and Bongulur to Pedda Amberpet.

Other proposed corridors included a 45-km stretch from Pedda Amberpet (NH 65) through Ghatkesar and Shamirpet to Medchal junction; a 29-km stretch from Medchal junction (NH 44) through Dundigal to Patancheru junction (NH 65); and a 22-km stretch from Patancheru junction through Kokapet to Narsingi junction.

Metro to benefit several ORR-side villages

Under Phase-II Part-B, a 40km corridor has been proposed from the airport to Bharat Future City via Shamshabad, Pedda Golconda, Tukkuguda and Raviryal. Officials said 14 villages along this stretch would benefit.

Another 14 villages between Pedda Amberpet and Medchal, 10 villages between Medchal and Patancheru, and 12 villages between Patancheru and Narsingi are expected to gain from the network. If the metro is extended from Narsingi junction to Shamshabad airport, an additional six villages would receive improved public transport.

Earlier ORR station plan

The earlier plan proposed stations along four ORR stretches:

  • Shamshabad–Pedda Amberpet: 5 stations

  • Pedda Amberpet–Medchal: 5 stations

  • Medchal–Patancheru: 3 stations

  • Patancheru–Narsingi: 3 stations

Experts said adding another 22 km from Narsingi junction to Shamshabad airport would create a 158 km continuous metro ring. They noted that seamless inter-connectivity from this ring into the city would be essential for commuter convenience.

Parking hubs planned outside ORR

The earlier administration proposed parking zones of 5–10 acres at four ORR access points to prevent private vehicles from entering the city. Commuters could park at ORR junctions, board the metro and reach inner-city destinations within 20–25 minutes. Officials had also suggested end-to-end metro operations around the ORR, though the plan has not progressed.
