Accidents Are Increasing On Hyderabad Orr

HYDERABAD: Driver fatigue and motorists falling asleep at the wheel during post-midnight hours have emerged as the leading causes of severe accidents on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). An internal analysis by Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) highlighted this trend.

Officials found that more than 35% of serious crashes occur between midnight and 6am. They identified long-distance travel, late-night driving, and fatigue as major triggers.

Recent fatal accidents involving speeding vehicles and heavy commercial traffic have added concern over road safety on the high-speed corridor.

Accident figures show rising trend

HGCL data shows the ORR recorded 1,605 accidents in 2025. These included 67 fatal crashes that killed 81 people.

Another 126 accidents caused grievous injuries to 197 people. Minor injury crashes affected 799 individuals across 464 incidents.

Officials also recorded 948 non-injury accidents. They said 3,437 people were affected in total across all categories.

Early 2026 sees continued increase

Accidents rose further in early 2026. Between January and April, officials reported 547 incidents.

This included 25 fatal crashes and 88 grievous injury cases.

Month-wise data showed a steady rise. January recorded 121 accidents, February 116, March 142, and April 168. April emerged as the worst month in this period.

Officials said high temperatures and prolonged air-conditioning use may also increase driver fatigue during long trips.

Time-based accident patterns

The report linked different time periods to specific crash causes.

Morning crashes between 6am and noon mainly resulted from commuter rush.

Afternoon incidents often involved heavy traffic movement.

Evening and night crashes increased due to long travel hours and driver exhaustion.

Officials said late-night hours remain the most dangerous for commuters.

Fatigue leads accident causes

HGCL identified fatigue and drowsy driving as the leading cause of accidents. It accounts for 33% of total incidents.

Negligent driving caused 25% of crashes. Overspeeding contributed 15%.

Tyre bursts led to 14% of accidents.

Traffic load remains high

Traffic on the ORR stayed consistently heavy. In April 2026, average daily traffic crossed 2.74 lakh vehicles.

January recorded 2.67 lakh vehicles per day. February saw 2.83 lakh, while March recorded 2.73 lakh.

Officials said high traffic volume adds pressure on road safety systems.

Crash patterns and surveillance

Rear-end collisions formed a major accident category. Officials recorded 196 such incidents in 2026.

Crashes involving medians and crash barriers stood at 43 and 47 respectively.

Overspeeding and loss of control led to 50 and 62 incidents.

Authorities monitor the ORR using CCTV cameras, ANPR systems, overspeed detection devices, and road safety infrastructure through the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre.

Despite these systems, officials said fatigue-related crashes continue to dominate serious accidents.
