Hyderabad Old City Metro corridor land acquisition nears finish
Hyderabad: Work on the Old City Metro corridor under Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase II is gaining pace, with the land acquisition process nearing completion. Officials of Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) said only 55 more affected properties need to be acquired to clear the way for construction.
The Corridor VI project connects MGBS with Chandrayangutta over 7.5 km. The project is being taken up as a joint venture between the Centre and Telangana government.
After the Nagole-Shamshabad Airport corridor, the state government has been focusing on the Old City stretch. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has repeatedly referred to the area as the “original city” rather than the “Old City”.
The state government is awaiting the Centre’s approval of the detailed project report (DPR) for Phase II to begin work on the corridor.
Acquisition target reduced after alignment changes
Initially, officials had estimated that about 1,400 properties on both sides of the road from Darul Shifa to Chandrayangutta would be required for the project. The requirement was later reduced to 888 following changes to the alignment.
Of the 888 properties identified, 833 have been acquired so far, leaving 55 to be secured.
The Old City corridor, which will connect with the existing Phase I network, will have stations at Salar Jung Museum, Charminar, Shalibanda, Shamsher Ganj, Jangammet and Falaknuma.
The foundation stone for the project was laid at the Falaknuma RTC premises on March 8, 2024.
Compensation payments are followed by demolition work
About 60% of the properties acquired so far are commercial buildings, while 40% are residential houses.
Officials are paying compensation to property owners and taking up demolition work immediately after the properties are handed over. Demolition activity has also intensified along the Lal Darwaza–Moti? [source text unclear at this point] stretch.
