Hyderabad nurse loses ₹7.7 lakh in matrimonial fraud by man posing as UK doctor

HYDERABAD: A 48-year-old nurse from Chintal lost ₹7,76,930 in an online matrimonial fraud after a man posing as a doctor from the United Kingdom allegedly duped her with promises of marriage.
Police said the victim, Nurse, had uploaded her profile on a Matrimony mobile application in January 2026. On February 17, a person identifying himself as Kumar Varma contacted her through WhatsApp from mobile and expressed interest in marriage.
Complainant told police that the man claimed he was a doctor based in the UK and said he liked her profile on the matrimonial platform. She initially declined his proposal as he lived abroad, but he allegedly convinced her by saying he would soon travel to India.
Money demanded citing airport formalities
According to the complaint, the suspect later informed her that he would arrive in India by February 25 along with his son and gold. He also sent photographs showing himself and a child at an airport and inside an aircraft to gain her trust.
On February 25, the suspect contacted her again from mobile and claimed that officials at Mumbai airport had stopped him because he did not possess a required health “yellow card” for international arrivals.
He allegedly asked her to transfer ₹42,000 to obtain the document. Believing his claim, Usharani transferred the amount to the bank account provided by him.
Victim transferred money multiple times
The suspect later demanded additional payments, stating they were required for currency exchange and taxes on the gold he was allegedly carrying.
Police said the victim transferred ₹2,18,000 for currency conversion from pounds to Indian rupees and another ₹1,21,500 as tax for excess gold worth ₹74 lakh. The suspect also demanded ₹68,750 for accommodation charges during the airport process.
In total, Victim transferred ₹7,76,930 through MeeSeva transactions to accounts shared by the suspect.
Police said the complainant requested action against the suspect, identified as Kumar Varma, who used two mobile numbers
A case has been registered and an investigation is under way.
