Telangana to get new police stations

Police Station

HYDERABAD: The face of policing in Hyderabad is set for another change, with new police stations proposed across the city’s four police commissionerates. The move comes amid rapid expansion of Hyderabad and a sharp rise in population in the suburbs.

New stations and jurisdiction changes planned

The government set up new police stations in the city in 2023. At the time, the total number of law and order police stations across the three commissionerates stood at 146.

The government reorganised the city’s police commissionerates again in the last week of December last year. It made major changes to their boundaries and created the new Future City commissionerate.

The reorganisation has led to some confusion among officials. Crime numbers are also rising in some zones, while the jurisdictions of some police stations remain difficult to manage.

As a result, the police department is working on changes to the jurisdictions of some existing police stations, divisions and zones, besides proposing new stations.

Large zones create policing challenges

The number of police stations varies sharply between zones. The Malkajgiri zone in the Malkajgiri commissionerate has 15 police stations and covers a large geographical area.

The zone stretches from Market and Tukaramgate in Secunderabad to Keesara and Shamirpet in the outskirts. Officials said moving personnel between distant areas for bandobast during major events or visits by state-level dignitaries has become difficult.

In contrast, the Uppal and LB Nagar zones have seven police stations each within relatively defined areas.

The Serilingampally zone in Cyberabad and the Maheshwaram zone in Future City also cover large geographical areas.

There is confusion over names as well. The Shamsabad zone has been merged with the Hyderabad commissionerate, while the Shamsabad police station with the same name remains under the Future City commissionerate.

More changes expected in suburban areas

Officials said the proposed changes will focus largely on the city’s outskirts. The exercise to redraw jurisdictions has been completed and orders are expected soon.

Director General of Police CV Anand recently reviewed the arrangements with the commissioners of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, Malkajgiri and Future City and gave several suggestions.

He directed officials to consider municipal boundaries, revenue divisions and court jurisdictions while finalising the new boundaries. Officials said most of the changes are likely to take place in suburban areas.

A new police station is proposed at Aziznagar under the Moinabad police station limits, taking into account population growth and the expansion of the suburbs.

A new division is also being planned with Moinabad as its headquarters.

The Narsingi police station is likely to be divided, with a new station proposed at Kokapet or under another name. Another station is proposed in the information technology corridor, possibly under the name Kondapur or Financial District.

The Meerpet police station is also likely to be divided, with a new station proposed under the name Badangpet. Boduppal and Moulali are among the other names under consideration.

New traffic police stations are also proposed.
