Hyderabad Plans New Flyover Linking Airport Corridor
HYDERABAD: As part of its radial corridor development plans, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has proposed a new flyover connecting GVK One Mall in Banjara Hills to the PVNR Expressway via Masab Tank. The proposed structure will stretch about 4 km and is aimed at providing smoother access from the city to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Field surveys have already begun, and officials are targeting completion within the next two years.
Commuters face delays on existing route
Although the PVNR Expressway offers a fast route to the airport, commuters often face heavy congestion before reaching the elevated corridor. Traffic bottlenecks are common between Road No. 1 in Banjara Hills, GVK One Mall, Taj Krishna, Care Hospitals and Masab Tank, with travel times occasionally stretching to more than an hour during peak periods.
Officials expect the new flyover to provide relief to motorists travelling in both directions and reduce delays on one of the city’s busiest airport corridors.
Multiple ramps planned for connectivity
The proposed flyover will begin near GVK One Mall in Banjara Hills and pass over the Masab Tank Circle before running alongside the existing corridor and merging with the PVNR Expressway.
Motorists travelling from Begumpet will be able to use the Panjagutta flyover, enter the new corridor near GVK One Mall and continue directly towards Aramghar without stopping at traffic signals.
HMDA also plans a down-ramp near Road No. 12 in Banjara Hills. This will help passengers arriving from the airport reach Roads No. 10 and 12 more conveniently.
Another proposal under consideration is a smaller flyover beneath the main structure near Chintalbasti Junction to facilitate smoother movement of vehicles travelling from Khairatabad and Somajiguda towards Road No. 12. An additional up-ramp is proposed near NMDC to allow vehicles coming from Lakdikapul and Masab Tank Junction to access the new flyover seamlessly.
DPR to determine project cost
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared to determine project costs, land acquisition requirements and other technical aspects.
HMDA Chief Engineer Ravinder said the government was committed to constructing the flyover and that the project would significantly reduce traffic congestion in the area while improving connectivity for airport-bound passengers.
