HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) has reported a major escalation in drug seizures and arrests in 2025, dismantling interstate supply chains and arresting over 366 individuals, including foreign nationals, in a year-long crackdown on narcotics trafficking.

According to the Hyderabad City Police Annual Report 2025, H-NEW registered 75 cases and seized narcotics valued at approximately Rs 6.45 crore, representing one of the city’s most intensive recent anti-drug operations.

The Telangana government remains committed to making Hyderabad and the state drug-free. The Hyderabad City Police have prioritized narcotics enforcement and are establishing seven zone-wise teams, with implementation underway.

Major seizures

The data shows a significant increase in both the quantity and variety of drugs intercepted. Ganja seizures rose to 3,243 kgs in 2025 from 1,364 kgs in 2024. Authorities also confiscated 5 litres of hash oil, 27 kgs of poppy husk, and synthetic drugs, including MDMA (1,435 grams), cocaine (336 grams), LSD blots (68), and hydroponic ganja (1,609 grams). Illegal cash of Rs 49.5 lakh was also recovered from drug peddlers.

In 2025, H-NEW arrested 366 individuals, including 108 transporters, suppliers, and peddlers; 210 consumers; 45 interstate and international peddlers; and 3 foreign nationals. Eleven foreign nationals were deported in coordinated operations. Speaking on the occasion, V C Sajjar said, “Similarly, while apprehending those involved in narcotics is one thing, investigating each case is also a major challenge because there are many networks and financial dealings involved. We have to send samples to labs or uncover their history and background. So, for that, we are further strengthening the H-NEW Wing.”

He added that while the H-NEW Wing focuses on information and intelligence gathering, a separate unit for NDPS investigations is being established. A DCP-level officer will lead a dedicated team to handle cases involving commercial quantities of drugs, with the goal of securing convictions and ensuring strict penalties for offenders.

The wing reported increased involvement of interstate networks. Recent operations uncovered supply chains extending from neighbouring states and cross-border connections.

In one of the year’s most significant operations, H-NEW and Langar Houz police arrested five individuals on December 13, 2025, in connection with an interstate drug supply racket. Authorities seized hash oil and ganja valued at Rs 70 lakh, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the organized narcotics trade in the city.

Special wing to be established

Total NDPS cases rose from 322 in 2024 to 368 in 2025. The higher volume of seizures, particularly ganja, reflects stronger enforcement and possibly increased trafficking. The rise in synthetic drug availability suggests changing trends in substance abuse among urban populations.

H-NEW works closely with the Telangana State Anti-Narcotics Bureau and national agencies to track financial flows, digital footprints, and transport routes used by drug networks. The wing also participates in the Hyderabad City Security Council’s Anti-Narcotics Forum, which held awareness programs for over 3,000 school children in 2025.

Further, V C Sajjar said, “Similarly, we have brought together all our partners, including our Eagle Team, and external agencies like the DRI, ED, NCB, Drugs Department, and Excise Department, onto a single platform. Last month, we conducted a coordination meeting. In the coming days, we will meet monthly to exchange detailed information and intelligence on drug supply. We have prepared a platform for this purpose.”

He added that the Hyderabad City Police are planning a major intelligence-based operation to identify sources, consumers, and key suppliers, with the aim of dismantling these networks. He emphasized that enforcement efforts will intensify and all offenders will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
