HYDERABAD: The Telangana government on Tuesday announced ₹5 lakh ex gratia to the families of those killed in the fire at a furniture shop in Nampally. Five people died in the incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the building owner, Satish Bachas, was arrested by police from Abids police station in connection with the case.

Terming the incident “most unfortunate”, revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said the deaths were painful and could have been avoided. He said preliminary findings pointed to negligence by the furniture shop owner and stressed the need for steps to prevent such incidents from recurring. The government would extend all possible assistance to the victims’ families, he added.

Hyderabad in-charge minister Ponnam Prabhakar expressed shock over the tragedy and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He directed officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, police, revenue department and HYDRAA to coordinate and ensure strict enforcement of fire safety norms.

The minister urged citizens to report buildings that violate fire safety regulations.
