HYDERABAD: An elderly woman was murdered for gold by her tenant in Nacharam on the outskirts of Hyderabad, police said on December 25.

The victim, Sujata, 65, had been living alone after the deaths of her husband and son. Police said the accused, Anjibabu, who had rented a portion of her house two months ago, noticed that she possessed gold jewellery and cash.

Anjibabu, who works as a driver and hails from Konaseema district, allegedly planned the murder to steal the valuables and start a new life elsewhere.

Murder and disposal of body

On the night of December 19, Anjibabu allegedly strangled Sujata to death inside her house. He removed 11 tolas of gold jewellery from her body, locked the house from outside and fled, police said.

The accused later informed his friends Yuvaraju and Durgarao about the murder. On September 20, the trio reportedly hired a car, transported the body and dumped it into the Godavari River at Krishnalanka in Konaseema district.

Police investigation

When Sujata failed to respond to calls, relatives visited her house on September 24 and found it locked. They lodged a complaint with the police after she could not be traced.

During the investigation, police noticed that Anjibabu was also missing. He was traced, taken into custody and questioned, during which he confessed to the crime and disclosed where the body had been dumped.

Police arrested all three accused and produced them before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody. They were later sent to jail.
