Asaduddin Owaisi Files Complaint Against Himanta Biswa Sarma Over Video

HYDERABAD: MP Asaduddin Owaisi has lodged a formal complaint seeking criminal action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a video circulated on social media. He alleged that the clip promotes communal hatred and violence.

Allegations of Repeated Communal Remarks

In his complaint, Asaduddin Owaisi stated that Sarma has, for several years, made statements against the Muslim community. According to him, the remarks appeared across social media, print platforms, and public speeches. Many of these statements, he said, remain available in the public domain.

In recent months, Owaisi alleged, the chief minister intensified such remarks. He claimed the statements aimed to outrage religious feelings and promote enmity between Hindus and Muslims.

Controversial Video Shared on Party Account

Referring to a video posted on the official X account of the Assam Bharatiya Janata Party on February 7, 2026, Owaisi said the clip showed Sarma armed with a firearm. The video allegedly depicted him aiming at persons portrayed as Muslims, followed by gunfire.

Although the party removed the post a day later, Owaisi said the video continued to circulate. He noted that several users uploaded the clip on other platforms, including YouTube.

Claims of Intent to Incite Violence

The complaint stated that the imagery, along with phrases such as “Point blank shot” and “No Mercy,” reflected deliberate intent. According to Owaisi, the content aimed to incite communal hatred and violence.

He further stated that he viewed the video within the jurisdiction of the concerned police station. On that basis, he sought action under applicable provisions of law.

Reference to Supreme Court Ruling

Citing the Supreme Court judgment in Shaheen Abdulla v. Union of India & Ors., Owaisi stressed the role of the State. He noted that the court had held it to be the constitutional duty of authorities to protect fundamental rights.

Moreover, the ruling directed police to take suo motu action in cases of hate speech. This duty applies even in the absence of a formal complaint, the MP said.
