HYDERABAD: The city police and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have decided to jointly implement preventive measures ahead of the monsoon to minimise inconvenience to residents.

A coordination meeting was held on Thursday at the Old Police Commissionerate Office in Basheerbagh under the leadership of V. C. Sajjanar and R. V. Karnan.

Desilting, repairs to start without waiting for rains

Officials directed field teams to begin desilting of drainage systems and repair of pipelines immediately, instead of waiting for the onset of rains. They stressed that early action would help prevent flooding and related disruptions.

Authorities also identified the top 10 waterlogging points in the city and instructed teams to start permanent mitigation work at these locations.

Safety measures for pedestrians and motorists prioritised

Officials ordered that all open manholes be securely covered to avoid risks to public safety. They also emphasised preparing and implementing a plan to remove encroachments on footpaths to improve pedestrian movement.

Street lighting was flagged as a priority, with instructions to ensure proper functioning of existing lights and installation of new ones where required.

To reduce accidents, officials said engineering defects on roads must be rectified. Measures were also suggested to manage traffic congestion near ongoing flyover and underpass construction sites.

₹150 crore allocated for traffic improvement works

Karnan said preventing loss of life and property during the monsoon was the primary responsibility of officials. “GHMC will work closely with the police department to further improve urban infrastructure, with special focus on road maintenance and city beautification,” he said.

He added that a dedicated budget of ₹25 crore per zone, totalling ₹150 crore, would be allocated for traffic improvement works.

Sajjanar said such coordination meetings help resolve ground-level issues quickly. He stressed that traffic regulation and pedestrian safety should remain top priorities.

The meeting was attended by D. Joel Davis, Avinash Kumar, Kajal, along with GHMC zonal commissioners and senior engineering officials.
