Hyderabad plans mega rail terminals on city outskirts

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has prepared plans for mega railway terminals around Hyderabad to ease congestion caused by increasing train traffic from across states. It has sought 1,125 acres from the state government, stressing that the land should be free of disputes.
The Charlapalli station on the eastern side is already operational. The Railways plans to expand it into a major terminal and has requested 250 acres for the purpose. It has also sought land for three additional terminals in other directions.
Terminals planned to reduce congestion at main stations
At present, Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Kacheguda serve as the main stations. Due to limited platforms, long-distance trains often halt outside stations until platforms become available.
To address this, the Railways has proposed new terminals in the city outskirts in a phased manner. Trains arriving from the north, west and south will be handled at these terminals, reducing pressure on central stations and saving travel time.
The proposed locations are:
- Dabilpur (north): 250 acres
- Nagulapalli (west): 325 acres
- Jukkal (south): 300 acres
- Charlapalli expansion (east): 250 acres
This will also provide passengers with access to railway stations closer to their residential areas.
Final surveys completed for three locations
The South Central Railway has completed feasibility studies for the three proposed terminals at Dabilpur, Jukkal and Nagulapalli and submitted reports to the Railway Board.
It spent ₹13.96 crore on the study and submitted the final survey report on March 11. Following this, it formally requested the state government to allocate a total of 1,125 acres, including land for Charlapalli expansion.
Similar terminal models already exist in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai
