HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Police have flagged a rise in marriage-related frauds, with several complaints reaching the Hyderabad She Teams.

Police said the cases follow a pattern in which fraudsters approach families through traditional matchmaking channels. After formal engagements are held and alliances are publicly announced, the accused allegedly build emotional closeness with the bride-to-be.

Officials said the men persuade the women to trust them completely, claiming the marriage is already fixed.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar said some accused use emotional manipulation to pressure women into physical intimacy before marriage.

“After exploiting the victim’s trust, they allegedly begin demanding large sums of money or additional dowry to go ahead with the wedding. If the demands are not met, they threaten to cancel the marriage, putting immense pressure on the woman and her family,” Sajjanar said.

Families hesitate due to social stigma

With engagements already known among relatives and society, many families hesitate to approach the police, fearing social embarrassment.

Police said the accused take advantage of this silence and escalate harassment and financial extortion.

The commissioner urged families not to ignore warning signs and advised them to conduct thorough background checks of prospective grooms, including their behaviour, habits and friend circles, even if the match is arranged by elders.

He cautioned young women to firmly refuse any pressure for private meetings, physical relationships before marriage or monetary demands.

Women in distress can contact Hyderabad She Teams on WhatsApp at 9490616555 or dial 100 for immediate assistance, police said.
