Hyderabad man finds cockroach in juice glass ordered through Swiggy

Hyderabad: A man in Hyderabad raised concerns about food safety after discovering a cockroach in a juice glass he ordered from Swiggy.

The man shared a photo of the glass on his ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “Cockroach in my food @Swiggy. I ordered food from Gourmet Shawarma on Instagram. Swiggy just gave me a refund and said someone will contact me, but no one should receive food like this. @GHMCOnline @CommissionrGHMC @TV9Telugu @foodsafetyghmc #FoodSafety #Hyderabad.”

In response, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) asked for details, “Dear Citizen, kindly share the location details of the restaurant.” The man then provided information regarding the restaurant, tagging the Commissioner of Food Safety for Telangana.

GHMC assured the man, saying, “Dear Citizen, the concerned Food Safety team has been alerted about this issue, and it will be resolved at the earliest. @AFCGHMC.”

Swiggy also responded, stating, “@tarun_kappala Hi Tarun, we aim to meet your expectations with our services. We’re here to support you with this matter. Could you please provide more details via DM so we can assist you more effectively? ^ Vignesh.”

This incident is part of a worrying pattern of food safety violations in the city. On October 17, 2024, a man discovered a lizard in his noodles at Ganesh Fast Food and Biryani Point, located at Bapuji Nagar Cross Road in Parsigutta, Secunderabad. Despite confronting the management, the man reported a dismissive response and filed a complaint with GHMC.

Earlier in August 2024, a couple found a burnt cockroach in their masala dosa at Sri Raghavendra Hotel on Ferozguda Municipal Corporation Warangal Highway. In another incident on August 2, customers at Meridian restaurant in Punjagutta found cockroaches in both chicken and mutton dishes. Srikhande Umesh Kumar raised the issue on ‘X,’ tagging the Commissioner of Food Safety, GHMC, and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), urging immediate action.

At Bahar Cafe in KPHB Phase 3, customers reported rats roaming freely and consuming leftover food. Manish (@WoMotaWalaLadka) took to ‘X,’ calling for immediate intervention and tagging relevant authorities. His post described the café’s hygiene as “non-existent,” with rats roaming the tables and owners ignoring complaints.

Another food safety issue was reported on June 29, when a customer found a safety pin in biryani at Mehfil Restaurant in Manikonda. This followed a previous complaint about bugs in biryani from the restaurant’s Kukatpally branch.
