As work-related stress rises, young professionals in Hyderabad are increasingly choosing interactive social games over conventional weekend outings. Alongside pubs, parties and films, strategy-based “Mafia Nights” are emerging as a new form of entertainment in the city’s IT corridor.
Popular cafés and social lounges in the Mindspace area are hosting these events during weekends, attracting participants looking for both recreation and social interaction.
Strategy, teamwork and new friendships drive the trend
In Mafia Nights, strangers gather to play assigned secret roles such as Mafia members, police officers, doctors and townspeople. The game revolves around deduction, discussion, deception and teamwork, with participants attempting to identify the hidden Mafia members.
The format encourages strategic thinking, quick decision-making and communication skills. Organisers say the sessions also provide opportunities for participants to meet new people and expand their social circles.
A game typically involves seven to 20 players. One participant serves as the moderator, while others are secretly assigned different roles through cards or slips.
How the game works
Before the game begins, a moderator is chosen to oversee the session and assign roles confidentially.
The Mafia members secretly eliminate townspeople one by one during each round. The objective of the remaining players is to identify the Mafia through discussion and voting.
The detective or police role allows a player to privately verify, through the moderator, whether a suspected participant belongs to the Mafia. The doctor can protect one player each round from being eliminated by the Mafia.
Trend spreads across major cities
The concept has also gained popularity in other metropolitan cities.
In Bengaluru, cafés in the city’s IT hubs regularly organise Mafia Nights, drawing professionals seeking a break from work-related stress.
In Mumbai, gaming clubs in Juhu and Andheri conduct themed Mafia Nights for enthusiasts.
In Delhi, specialist gaming cafés host late-evening sessions centred on the strategy game.
