LPG shortage raises concerns over haleem supply during Ramzan in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Concerns have emerged over a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders that could disrupt food operations at eateries during Ramzan. The situation has raised fears that the popular dish haleem may disappear from menus in parts of Hyderabad.
Industry sources say large-scale haleem production may face some operational challenges. However, the dish is unlikely to disappear from Ramzan menus across the city.
Haleem preparation mainly depends on wood-fired kilns. Therefore, the LPG shortage is not expected to affect the core cooking process significantly.
However, restaurants use LPG stoves to prepare fried onions, an essential ingredient in haleem. The shortage could affect this part of the preparation.
Restaurants may scale down regular menus
Restaurant owners say the shortage could impact regular food services more than haleem production. Many eateries currently have LPG stocks that may last only a few days.
If the situation worsens, some tourism-dependent restaurants and hotels may scale down or temporarily halt their regular operations. However, they are likely to continue Ramzan-specific haleem production.
Geopolitical tensions affecting supply
Industry representatives say the LPG shortage is partly linked to geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel. These tensions have started affecting supply chains in several countries.
Although the situation in Hyderabad remains largely under control, restaurant owners have urged the government to intervene and address the supply constraints.
Meanwhile, the government has increased the minimum waiting period for booking a domestic LPG refill from 21 days to 25 days to prevent hoarding.
