Hyderabad police warn oil traders against loose edible oil sale, set 15-day deadline

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Police on April 26, 2026, directed oil manufacturers and suppliers to stop selling loose edible oil and comply with food safety norms within 15 days, warning of strict legal action for violations.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Commissioner’s Task Force & In-charge H-FAST) Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath held an awareness meeting with stakeholders at the H-FAST building in Begumbazar. He stressed adherence to legal standards in the manufacture and sale of edible oils.
The officer said sale of loose or unbranded oil poses health risks and violates regulations. He instructed all stakeholders to sell only properly packaged and sealed products.
Packaging norms, labelling details made mandatory
Officials outlined key compliance requirements during the meeting. These include mandatory packaging, proper branding, and adherence to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines.
Manufacturers must clearly mention manufacturing date, expiry date, batch number, FSSAI licence number, and type or grade of oil on packaging.
They were also asked to maintain hygiene during processing, storage and transport. Authorities warned against adulteration, including mixing inferior or recycled substances.
15-day deadline issued; strict legal action warned
Police said violations would attract action under the Food Safety and Standards Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
“All oil associates must ensure full compliance within 15 days, including stopping loose oil sales and adopting proper packaging standards,” the DCP said.
He also urged businesses to maintain transparency and prioritise public health over profit.
The meeting was attended by Inspectors N. Ranjith Kumar Goud and M. Anjaiah, along with sub-inspectors and oil industry stakeholders.
Participants appreciated the initiative and assured cooperation.
Public advised to buy only sealed, branded oil
Police issued a public advisory asking consumers to purchase only sealed and branded edible oil from authorised sellers. They urged people to check labels carefully and report suspected adulteration or illegal sale.
This initiative is part of H-FAST’s ongoing efforts to curb food adulteration at the source and ensure safe products reach consumers.
