Hyderabad pub booked for serving liquor to two 16-year-olds

HYDERABAD: EAGLE officials found a pub on Road No. 36, Jubilee Hills, serving liquor to two 16-year-old boys on Saturday night. The pub management was later booked by Jubilee Hills police, as reported by TOI.
The action comes amid a case in which student Ramya’s family has been seeking justice in an alleged drunk-driving road accident involving an underage person.
Serving liquor to persons below 21 years is an offence. Telangana Excise Department rules also prohibit licensed premises from serving or selling liquor to anyone below 21.
Two teens test positive during alcohol tests
EAGLE officials reached the pub after receiving an alert from a customer. They found five boys at the spot, including the two 16-year-olds.
Officials checked the boys’ ages using their Aadhaar cards. They then subjected them to alcohol tests, with two testing positive.
Both teenagers are Intermediate students. Their alcohol readings were 70 mg and 79 mg, respectively.
Police book pub management, officials seek licence cancellation
After confirming the violation, EAGLE officials alerted Jubilee Hills police. Police registered a criminal case against the pub for serving liquor to minors.
The pub management was booked under Section 36 of the Telangana Excise Act and the Juvenile Justice Act, according to officials.
“We will write a letter to municipal and excise authorities seeking cancellation of licence for violation of the Excise Act,” EAGLE officials said.
The boys who were at the pub are from business families, officials said. Their parents were informed and the teenagers were handed over to them.
Excise officials have been campaigning against serving liquor to minors. They have also made it mandatory for pubs and bars to display posters stating the restrictions on serving liquor to persons below 21.
