HYDERABAD: Land meant for flood canals in Jubilee Hills was encroached and sold as residential plots, prompting action by Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA).

With land prices in Jubilee Hills touching about ₹2 lakh per sq yard, former representatives of the Jubilee Hills Housing Society allegedly created plots over flood drain areas. A 120 sq yard plot and another of 180 sq yards were carved out and sold. These were also registered with the stamps and registration department.

A plot owner in the society filed a complaint through HYDRAA’s public grievance system.

Joint inquiry confirms encroachment over box drains

HYDRAA conducted a field inquiry along with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials and other departments. The probe found that flood canals from Madhapur Metro station and from the Peddamma Temple side were converted into box drains.

Despite the presence of these drains, attempts were made to raise structures above them.

Illegal structures cleared, flood channels restored

Encroachers had erected tin-sheet enclosures and constructed rooms for a watchman. HYDRAA removed these structures on Tuesday.

The agency protected about 300 sq yards of land and ensured the safety of the flood canals. Residents expressed gratitude to HyDRA for the action.
