BRS candidate Maganti Sunitha files affidavit declaring Rs 10.8 crore assets

HYDERABAD: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) candidate for the Jubilee Hills bye-election, Maganti Sunitha, filed her election affidavit on Wednesday, declaring a family net worth exceeding Rs 27 crore and disclosing a pending criminal case related to the electoral process.

The bye-election, called after the passing of her husband and sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath in June 2025, now sees Sunitha stepping forward to defend the BRS’s hold on the seat.

Assets and Liabilities

Sunitha’s personal assets total Rs 13.52 crore, comprising land in Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills valued at Rs 6.11 crore, 4 kg of gold worth Rs 5 crore, Rs 32 lakh in bank deposits and others. Her three children each hold assets of Rs 4.86 crore, Rs 4.40 crore, and Rs 5.08 crore respectively, mainly land and gold inherited from their late father. The combined assets of Maganti Sunitha and her children amount to Rs 27.86 crore.  

The Maganti family’s liabilities total Rs 10.54 crore, with Sunitha owing Rs 4.44 crore and her three children together responsible for Rs 6.10 crore.

Pending Criminal Case

Additionaly, Sunitha stated in her affidavit that a criminal case was filed against her at Jubilee Hills Police Station on October 10, 2025. The case includes charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Representation of the People Act, such as undue influence, impersonation during an election, not following a public servant’s order, and using religious places for political activity. The affidavit says that charges have not yet been framed.

Income and Education

Further Sunitha describes herself as a businesswoman, drawing her income from entrepreneurial ventures. She completed her SSC (10th class) in 1985-86 at Zilla Parishad High School in Penamaluru, Krishna District.

It is pertinent to note that Maganti Sunitha Gopinath officially joined the race on Wednesday by filing her nomination papers at the Sheikhpet Tahsildar’s office and starting her campaign. Many senior BRS leaders attended the event, showing the party’s commitment to the constituency. Notable attendees included Party Working President K. T. Rama Rao, former ministers Talasani Srinivasa Yadav and T. Padma Rao, former corporation chairman Ravula Sridhar Reddy, former Jubilee Hills MLA Vishnuvardhan Reddy, and Venugopal Nagar BRS corporator Dedeepya Rao.

Earlier, continuing her late husband Maganti Gopinath’s tradition, Sunitha began her day with a special darshan at Peddamma Temple in Jubilee Hills, seeking blessings for the election. She was accompanied by family members, including former MLA Vishnuvardhan Reddy.

Indeed, Sunitha face off against the BJP and Congress contenders is going to be a triangular fight. The bye-election is scheduled for November 11, with the results to be announced on November 14.
