Job scam accused convicted in Hyderabad, gets one-year jail term for cheating businessman of ₹10 lakh
HYDERABAD: A court in Hyderabad has convicted a man for cheating a businessman of ₹10 lakh by falsely promising him a high-paying job and later threatening him when he demanded his money back.
Acquaintance promised lucrative job for ₹10 lakh
The VIII Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at Nampally convicted Ananthula Abhilash, a resident of Nirmal district, in a cheating and criminal intimidation case registered by Chaderghat police.
According to police, Abhilash and complainant Shyam Sunder were known to each other for several years. The accused allegedly claimed to have influential contacts and promised to secure a high-salaried job for the complainant in exchange for ₹10 lakh.
Trusting the assurance, the complainant handed over ₹10 lakh to the accused in the presence of witnesses. Police said the accused issued a security cheque for the same amount and collected blank cheques and a promissory note from the complainant, assuring him that the job would be arranged within a month.
Delays led to demand for refund
However, the promised job was never provided. Police said the accused continued to delay the matter on various pretexts.
When the complainant sought the return of his money on March 5, 2017, the accused allegedly went to his residence along with associates and threatened him with dire consequences.
Based on a court-referred complaint dated March 20, 2017, Chaderghat police registered Crime No. 99/2017 under Sections 420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
Court finds accused guilty after trial
After trial, the VIII ACJM Court at Nampally found the accused guilty based on the evidence presented by the prosecution.
Pronouncing the judgment on June 11, 2026, the court sentenced Abhilash to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10,000.
Chaderghat police said the conviction followed the investigation conducted by then sub-inspector A. Raj Shekar Reddy and prosecution led by Assistant Public Prosecutor J. Ramani. Police also appreciated the efforts of court duty and process officers who assisted in securing the conviction.
