Six new skywalks planned across Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The state government has decided to construct six new skywalks across Greater Hyderabad to improve pedestrian safety in high-traffic areas. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has been directed to prepare detailed proposals for the projects on a priority basis.
Officials identified several congested junctions where pedestrians face difficulty crossing roads, leading to frequent accidents and traffic jams. The proposed locations include Afzalganj, Mehdipatnam, Lakdikapul (near the petrol bunk), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) junction, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) junction, and Miyapur T-junction.
HMDA has already opened the Uppal skywalk for public use and is expediting works at Mehdipatnam. It is also finalising designs for a skywalk connecting Secunderabad railway station with nearby metro stations and bus stands.
A study conducted earlier by Lee Associates identified 23 key locations in Hyderabad where skywalks were essential. Of these, the Uppal skywalk has been completed, while construction is in progress at Mehdipatnam.
The government has now prioritised six locations from the remaining 20 for immediate development. HMDA has appointed a consultancy to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Secunderabad skywalk.
