Reflectors now mandatory for all vehicles in Telangana

HYDERABAD:Â The government has made reflectors compulsory on all vehicles to reduce night-time road accidents. The order is in line with provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and earlier directions from the Supreme Court, which were not fully enforced.
Officials noted that many serious accidents occur when fast-moving vehicles collide with heavy trucks parked on the roadside or moving slowly without proper rear reflectors. To address this, the transport department has issued orders detailing standards and procedures.
Reflective tapes and rear marking plates must now comply with Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) 057, 090 and 089. The government has warned against the use of fake or substandard products. The rules apply to two-wheelers, tractors, trailers, power tillers and construction material carriers.
Only manufacturers approved by designated testing agencies will be empanelled to produce reflective tapes and plates. Foreign companies must have a 100% subsidiary registered in India.
From now, vehicle registration, renewal and fitness certification will be issued only after officials verify that reflectors are properly fitted. Legal action will be taken against violators and counterfeit manufacturers.
Special committees will monitor manufacturing units to ensure quality compliance and prevent fake products from reaching the market.
