Heavy rain likely in Hyderabad, south Telangana from June 18; IMD issues yellow alerts
HYDERABAD: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across Hyderabad and parts of south Telangana from June 18 to June 20, offering relief to regions affected by intense summer heat.
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for 10 districts, including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal. The alert indicates the possibility of rainfall of up to 5 cm.
Before the onset of widespread rainfall, light to moderate showers are likely across north and central Telangana on June 15, June 16 and June 17.
Monsoon advance slows after reaching Hyderabad
The southwest monsoon entered Telangana on June 8 and advanced gradually to Hyderabad and Bhadradri Kothagudem by June 11.
However, meteorologists said the monsoon’s progress has slowed since then. They estimate it may take another four days to cover the entire state.
Several districts in the erstwhile Nizamabad, Adilabad and Karimnagar regions are yet to receive full monsoon coverage.
North Telangana continues to reel under heat
In the absence of widespread rainfall, north Telangana continues to record high temperatures.
Ramagundam in Peddapalli district recorded the state’s highest temperature at 42.5°C on Sunday. Temperatures crossed 40°C in several mandals of Mancherial, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Mulugu, Hanamkonda and Kamareddy districts.
Relief expected later this week
Meteorologists expect monsoon activity to strengthen later this week, bringing relief to large parts of Telangana.
With heavy rain forecast in south Telangana and moderate showers expected in other regions, weather conditions are likely to shift from intense heat to a wetter pattern over the coming days.
