Hyderabad shifts Gudimalkapur market to city outskirts
HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has proposed relocating the 34-year-old Gudimalkapur Agricultural Market to the city outskirts to ease congestion and improve infrastructure. The existing market, known for its vegetable and flower trade, will be split into two facilities, with a vegetable and fruit market planned at Aziznagar and a flower market at Himayatsagar.
New markets to reduce congestion and improve logistics
The present market has limited space and is located in a densely populated area, causing difficulties for farmers, commission agents, wholesale traders and consumers. The heavy movement of vehicles has also led to persistent traffic congestion.
Under the proposal, a vegetable and fruit market will be established on 23.2 acres in Survey No. 176 at Aziznagar village in Moinabad mandal. A flower market will be developed on 19.10 acres in Survey No. 151 at Himayatsagar village.
Existing market struggles with rising demand
The Karwan Subzi Mandi was shifted to Gudimalkapur in 1991. While the market met the city’s needs at the time, Hyderabad has since expanded nearly fourfold.
Spread over 10 acres, the market now receives more than 2,000 vehicles every day. It faces shortages of parking space, internal roads and sanitation facilities. Basic infrastructure, including cold storage, is also unavailable. The government has prepared the new plan to address these issues and improve facilities for farmers, commission agents and consumers.
Modern facilities planned for farmers
The proposed Aziznagar and Himayatsagar markets are expected to benefit farmers from Vikarabad, Kodangal, Tandur, Parigi, Chevella, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Sangareddy and Medak districts and regions adjoining Hyderabad.
Located close to the Outer Ring Road, the new markets are expected to reduce transportation time and costs. The government plans to develop them to international standards with cold storage units, large parking areas, sorting and packing zones, modern drainage systems, a waste management plant, a farmers’ service centre, banking facilities, a canteen and dedicated blocks for commission agents.
