Telangana govt buildings owe ₹6,198 crore property tax

HYDERABAD: Government departments under the Centre and the state owe large property tax dues to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with total arrears estimated at ₹6,198.36 crore from around 2,800 Property Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs).
Of this, central government departments account for ₹433.3 crore, while state government buildings owe over ₹5,765 crore. An official said GHMC has collected only ₹34.89 crore so far in the 2025–26 financial year against total dues of ₹6,233.25 crore.
Departments with major pending dues
State departments with pending taxes include health, sports, commercial taxes, agriculture, Roads and Buildings, police, and the Water Board, along with the Road Transport Corporation (RTC).
Central government dues include departments such as Railways, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Legal action remains difficult as these are government entities.
Officials said about ₹55 crore is pending from Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) buildings, while RTC owes over ₹4 crore. GHMC, in turn, owes RTC dues related to subsidised bus passes, and a mutual adjustment is likely.
GHMC seeks settlement through OTS
GHMC has requested the state government to adjust long-pending tax dues against institutional liabilities. It proposed that the government clear GHMC’s existing debt of ₹4,870 crore.
However, the government has not responded positively so far. Officials are now exploring book adjustment methods to settle dues.
Of the total government arrears, the principal tax is ₹1,682 crore, while interest alone stands at ₹4,365.18 crore.
GHMC has written to various departments explaining benefits under the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme. Revenue officials said some departments have begun responding.
Total demand across corporations
Across three civic bodies, total property tax demand, including interest, stands at ₹14,930.80 crore.
Current financial year dues and interest: ₹2,763.18 crore
Previous years’ pending dues: over ₹12,000 crore
Of this:
Over ₹6,000 crore is due from government departments
Around ₹65,000 crore is expected from private properties
