GHMC drops Patigadda ROB plan over Paigah Palace
HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has dropped its proposal to construct a rail overbridge (ROB) connecting Patigadda in Begumpet with Necklace Road across the railway line.
The decision follows strong opposition to the plan to demolish part of the heritage Paigah Palace and several other buildings. Instead, the GHMC has written to the government seeking approval to construct a flyover from Sanjeevaiah Park to Minister Road.
The civic body has also revised the design of the proposed flyover at Rasoolpura junction.
Revised plan avoids land acquisition
Necklace Road and Begumpet are located close to each other, but the railway line lies between them. The GHMC had initially proposed an ROB to connect Patigadda with Necklace Road at a cost of ₹80 crore.
The proposal was later revised to ₹210 crore because of land acquisition and other connectivity requirements. Both versions required partial demolition of the heritage Paigah Palace.
The GHMC has now brought forward a proposal that does not require any land acquisition. It plans to transfer the approval granted for the original ROB to the new proposal and construct a flyover from in front of Sanjeevaiah Park, across the railway line, to Minister Road.
New design links Secunderabad, Minister Road
The GHMC has decided to construct a flyover connecting Secunderabad Road at Rasoolpura junction with Minister Road, allowing traffic movement in both directions.
Earlier, the proposal envisaged a Y-shaped flyover from the junction, with one arm leading to Minister Road and another to Patigadda Road in a single direction.
Following the cancellation of the Patigadda ROB, the GHMC has also revised the Y-shaped flyover design. Under the revised plan, the flyover will pass around the Metro building at the junction and cross over the Metro rail line.
