GHMC allocates ₹150 crore for road repairs

HYDERABAD: Three municipal corporations in the capital have initiated road repair works with significant budget allocations. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC), and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) have begun tender processes for road development works zone-wise.
GHMC has now focused on repairs. Commissioner RV Karnan has allocated ₹25 crore each to six zones, totalling ₹150 crore. He directed zonal commissioners to prepare proposals with lists of roads requiring repairs and submit them for approval before March 31.
Funds prioritised for colony roads
Corporators are using nearly 90% of funds for internal colony roads. Most cement concrete (CC) road works are being taken up under these allocations. In the old GHMC limits, ₹1 crore per division has been earmarked.
Zonal commissioners have alerted the engineering wing to expedite proposals. Charminar and Secunderabad zones have responded and are securing approvals for works.
Road length rises after urban expansion
CMC and MMC have also received substantial allocations. While ₹500 crore each was earmarked, works worth ₹300 crore in CMC and ₹250 crore in MMC have received approvals.
The total road network under the three corporations stands at 14,787.66 km. Earlier, the old GHMC area had about 9,000 km of roads. After the merger of 27 suburban local bodies, the network expanded to nearly 15,000 km.
However, a large number of roads in newly merged suburban areas remain unpaved, raising concerns. In places like Nagaram’s New Hanuman Nagar colony, roads have remained mud tracks for years.
CRMP to upgrade key roads
Under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP), approval has been given to develop 1,045.01 km of main roads across the three corporations at a cost of ₹3,145 crore.
