Hyderabad to be fourth fastest growing city by 2035
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad is set to emerge as India’s fourth fastest-growing city by gross domestic product by 2035, driven by an annual growth rate of 8.47%, with the city’s economy projected to touch $201.4 billion, the Economic Survey 2025–26 said.
The survey, tabled in Parliament on Thursday, said Hyderabad’s GDP is expected to nearly quadruple from about $50 billion in 2018 to $201.4 billion by 2035. Only Surat, Agra and Bengaluru are projected to grow faster, with annual growth rates of 9.17%, 8.58% and 8.50%, respectively.
Among fastest-growing cities
Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh is also projected to feature among the top 10 fastest-growing cities, with an estimated annual growth rate of 8.17%. Its economy is expected to expand from $5.6 billion in 2018 to $21 billion by 2035.
The survey noted that while Indian cities are advancing economically, they continue to face challenges in evolving into global cities comparable to New York, London, Shanghai and Singapore.
Municipal bonds, infrastructure push
The Economic Survey highlighted the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation as the country’s leading municipal body in bond mobilisation. GHMC has raised ₹500 crore through municipal bonds till September 2025, the highest by any city in India.
Ahmedabad ranked second, having raised ₹400 crore during the same period.
Industrial and services strength
The survey said Telangana accounts for nearly 5% of India’s total manufacturing employment, reflecting the expansion of the state’s industrial base. It added that the state has also emerged as a major contributor to the services sector, particularly in information technology, finance and professional services.
Hyderabad is home to nearly 7% of India’s artificial intelligence startups, reinforcing its position as a technology and innovation hub.
The economic momentum outlined in the survey aligns with Telangana’s long-term objective of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047, with Hyderabad positioned as the primary growth engine.
