Hyderabad floods Musheerabad One Dead

Hyderabad: The city of Hyderabad experienced a significant downpour, which started from Monday evening and continued till the early hours on Tuesday morning, leading to waterlogging and a flood-like situation in several low-lying areas of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert prior to the rain, advising citizens to remain cautious.

According to the data revealed by the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) Shaikpet in Jubilee hills circle recorded the highest rainfall with 54.0 mm. Further areas like Serlingampalli, Khairatabad, Balanagar, Quthbullapur, Golkonda, Maredpally, Ramachandrapuram and others received around 30mm of rainfall till August 19, 8pm in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas.

The intensity of the rain caught many residents by surprise, with some even mistaking the thunderclaps for an earthquake. One X (formerly Twitter) Vinay Kulkarni posted, “Was that an earthquake or a thunderbolt? For the first time in my life, a thunderclap scared me so much that it woke me from sleep.”

The heavy rain, which began late Monday night, continued into the early hours of Tuesday, exacerbating the situation in many parts of the city. Roads quickly became waterlogged, disrupting traffic and making commuting difficult for residents.

The IMD’s yellow alert remains in effect, with more rain predicted over the next 24 hours. The GHMC and traffic police have urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary and to avoid venturing into waterlogged areas. Hyderabad traffic police in a post on X said, “Due to continuous rains roads may be slippery and traffic congestion may be expected due to water logging, the commuters are requested to start early to reach their destination. Hyderabad traffic police are working to ensure the free flow of Traffic”.

The rain has also wreaked havoc in several places, resulting in unfortunate incidents, where a person, Vijay, aged 43 lost his life in Musheerabad constituency. Meanwhile, there are also where residents were seen tying ropes to their vehicles to prevent them from flooding.
